Additional slides

Slides prepared for a course at Peking University (Based on Ed 3)

These slides include animations and are therefore only suitable for online presentation using a data projector.

This page also provides access to a set of Powerpoint slides made by George Coulouris and Jean Dollimore in order to present a Masters-level course in Distributed Systems at Peking University in December 2001. These include extensive notes, explanations, animations and queries for students.

The students had already studied Chapters 1-5 of Ed 3 of our book and we were asked to teach them material from the remainder of Ed 3 of the book except for the Multimedia chapter, presenting some chapters in full and presenting a sampling from others. The teaching comprised two lectures of 1 hour 15 minutes every day over a period of two weeks. (25 hours altogether). This was quite intensive for the students and we would recommend allowing a little more time.

We include an outline of the course which shows how we related the teaching to the overall structure of our book. We decided to present the majority of the material from the above chapters and to cover selected topics on Name Services and Algorithms. Some revision material was included in each chapter and an entire lecture was devoted to revision of ideas on distributed objects (mainly from Chapter 5).
