Tandem France 2003: Nevers

go back to the diary    go back to the map

Nevers is a small town on the Loire on the western border of Burgundy. The Ducal palace in Nevers is a very fine renaissance building in yellow stone with a slate roof. The middle tower is interesting because its windows follow the line of the spiral staircase inside it. We were able to go in via the tourist office to see a small part of the interior. The rest of the palace is used as local council offices. The rooms include an automated talking model of the Duke of Gonzaga who completed the building of the palace in the 16th century.

We visited the beautiful 10th century romanesque church of St. Etienne. Two of its towers were removed during the revolution as were those of St. Pierre nearby.
