Brittany by Tandem

19th-30th September 2008

A twelve day tour in Finisterre and Morbihan

Distance covered 630 km

We planned to revisit some of the places we had seen on a cycle trip in 1985 and to add a few new ones. Last time we followed an anticlockwise route round the coast from Roscoff and then back across the hills. This time we followed a clockwise route, starting with the hills.

We had ideal cycling weather almost every day: temperatures of 18°-20° in the middle of the day but the very cold early mornings and evenings that seem to go with autumn sunny days. There was a little rain one morning; and then on the last day, some more rain, wind and a lower temperature. Every day was fine enough for a picnic lunch in an attractive spot.

We saw a great variety of interesting landscape: vegetable farming near Roscoff (mostly artichokes and cabbages); stunted trees, bracken and heath land on the Arrêt Mountains; some very picturesque hills on the way down to Carnac, and many spectacularly beautiful stretches of coastline.

Some of the interior of Brittany goes up and down a lot, giving us a couple of very tiring days, so we needed two days of rest between our three sets of three days on the bike.

We stayed in B and Bs wherever we could find them, but in the towns we used hotels so as to be central. Most of the B and Bs provided evening meals - other nights we ate out at restaurants. Crêpes and galettes predominated, but we also found plenty of fish and sea food.

We used First Great Western trains to travel between Paddington and Plymouth and a Brittany Ferries overnight boat to travel between Plymouth and Roscoff. The Practicalities page gives more details on the tandem, how we organised the trip and our first successful use of a GPS for navigation.
